If you've ever applied a strip of kinesiology tape only to have it peel off within a few hours, the tape probably isn't the problem. Application is everything — and most people skip the steps that actually make it work.
Here's exactly what you need to know to get it right, plus video guides for the most common areas.
1. Start With Clean, Dry Skin
This is non-negotiable. Kinesiology tape uses a heat-activated adhesive that bonds directly to your skin — and that bond simply won't form properly if the surface is oily, sweaty, or still damp from a shower.
How to prep your skin:
- Wash the area with mild soap and dry it thoroughly
- If you have particularly oily skin, wipe the area with rubbing alcohol first
- Wait at least 20–30 minutes after showering before applying — your skin needs time to fully settle
It sounds obvious, but skipping this step is the single most common reason kinesiology tape fails early.
2. Round the Corners Before You Apply
This sounds like a minor detail. It isn't.
Square corners catch on clothing, bedding, and the inside of your trainers — and once a corner lifts, the rest of the strip quickly follows. Before applying, use scissors to curve each corner into a rounded edge. It takes about ten seconds and can easily double how long the tape stays put.
3. Anchor First, Stretch Second
The most common application mistake is stretching the tape from end to end. The anchor points — the first and last few centimetres of each strip — should go on with zero stretch. This is what stops the tape from pulling at your skin and causing irritation or redness.
The stretch in the middle is what actually does the work: lifting the skin slightly to promote blood flow, reduce pressure, and support the surrounding tissue.
As a general guide:
- 25–50% stretch in the middle is enough for most applications
- More stretch doesn't mean more support — it usually just means more irritation
- For sensitive areas or sensitive skin, start at the lower end
4. Rub It In
Once the tape is applied, rub firmly along its full length for 20–30 seconds. This generates the heat needed to fully activate the adhesive — you'll feel the tape become noticeably more secure almost immediately.
Then, be patient. Apply kinesiology tape at least 20 minutes before exercise, swimming, or showering. The adhesive needs time to fully bond before it's put under stress.
How Long Should Kinesiology Tape Last?
Applied correctly, kinesiology tape should last three to five days — through workouts, showers, and everyday movement.
If yours is coming off sooner, go back to the prep steps first. Skin prep is almost always the culprit.
A few things worth knowing about tape and water:
- Water resistant ≠ waterproof. After swimming or showering, pat the tape dry with a towel rather than rubbing it.
- Avoid using a hairdryer. Heat can weaken the adhesive and shorten how long the tape stays on.
How to Remove Kinesiology Tape
Peel slowly in the direction of hair growth. Don't rush or rip — slow removal protects your skin, especially if the tape has been on for several days.
If the tape is being stubborn, apply a small amount of baby oil along the edge. This dissolves the adhesive without irritating the skin and makes removal much easier.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I apply kinesiology tape myself at home? Yes — with the right prep and technique, kinesiology tape is straightforward to apply at home. The steps above cover everything you need, and our video guides walk you through the most common areas.
Why does my kinesiology tape keep falling off? Usually down to skin prep. Make sure skin is clean, completely dry, and free from oils or moisturiser before applying. Rounding the corners and waiting 20 minutes before activity also makes a big difference.
How much stretch should I use? For most home applications, 25–50% stretch in the middle of the strip is enough. The anchor points at each end should always go on with zero stretch.
Can I shower with kinesiology tape on? Yes — kinesiology tape is water resistant. After showering, pat it dry gently with a towel rather than rubbing.
How long does kinesiology tape last? Applied correctly, three to five days — through workouts, showers, and daily movement.
