A yoga block is the most useful prop you can own. It brings the floor closer, supports your body and helps you find better alignment. Here are six ways to use one, whatever your level.
What a yoga block does
A firm block gives you height and support so you can hold poses with good form rather than straining to reach. A cork block is stable enough to bear weight and grippy when your hands are sweaty.
Six ways to use a yoga block
1. Raise the floor
In standing poses like triangle, rest your hand on the block instead of reaching all the way down.
2. Open the hips
Sit on the block in cross-legged poses to tilt the pelvis and ease the hips and lower back.
3. Support restorative poses
Place a block under your back or head in bridge and reclined poses for a supported stretch.
4. Build engagement
Squeeze a block between the thighs in bridge or boat to switch on the inner thighs and core.
5. Steady balance
Use blocks under the hands in a lunge or half-split to stay level and controlled.
6. Sit for meditation
Use the block as a low seat to keep the spine tall and comfortable.
Tip: use all three heights
Turn the block on its tall, medium or low side to set exactly the height you need.
